Elizabeth B. Luzuriaga
Elizabeth is a founding equity partner of Luzuriaga Mims, LLP with a practice focusing on state and federal workers' compensation law. Elizabeth is a member of the South Carolina Bar, as well as the Georgia Bar, and practices in both states. She is experienced in handling coverage matters, multi-party claims, medically complex claims, as well as concurrent jurisdiction claims under the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Act and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. As well as fostering a litigation practice, Elizabeth counsels many clients in pre-claim settings to assist in lowering her clients' workers' compensation costs.
Elizabeth is a Certified Mediator and regularly mediates cases under the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Act, as well as concurrent jurisdiction claims involving the Longshore Act and the South Carolina and/or Georgia State Workers' Compensation Act. Elizabeth mediates cases under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act as well as the Defense Base Act throughout the Southeast. She is licensed to practice in US District Court in South Carolina and Georgia as well as the United States Fourth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal.
Elizabeth frequently speaks at national and regional conferences on various topics under the heading of the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Act and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act sharing her experiences from pre-claim counseling to litigating workers' compensation matters.
Elizabeth is a 1984 graduate of Georgetown University and has participated in the Georgetown University Alumni Admissions Program for the past 27 years. Elizabeth earned her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1987. She was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1987 and the Georgia Bar in 1992. Elizabeth enjoys an AV Preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Elizabeth has been selected by her peers for inclusion in U.S. News - Best Lawyers in America every year since 2010, and in 2012, Elizabeth had the honor of being named Best Lawyers Defense Attorney of the Year in the area of Workers' Compensation Law - Employers. Additionally, Elizabeth was selected for inclusion in American Registry's "Best South Carolina Lawyer" for 2013 and was recently named to the "10 Best" in Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Legal Counsel for 2016.
Locally, Elizabeth served as an adjunct professor teaching South Carolina Workers' Compensation Law at the Charleston School of Law from 2009 & 2014 and served nine years on the Board of Trustees at Ashley Hall School. She is a member of the South Carolina Self-Insurer's Association, the South Carolina Maritime Association, the Propeller Club, and the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Educational Association. She serves on the 2017 Educational Conference Planning Committee for the SCWCEA and on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Association of South Carolina. Most recently, Elizabeth was awarded by Best Lawyers the Women in Law Designation as a Top Peer Nominated Lawyer for 2017.
